In 1965, op zestien kilometer door mist geteisterde kustlijn van Noord-Californië, sloten een groep architecten een verbond met het land. Geen strak gemanicuurde gazons. Geen opgelegde orde. Lawrence Halprin ontwierp de masterplan voor de gemeenschap met de overtuiging dat het landschap zelf de architectuur was. Charles Moore, Donlyn Lyndon, William Turnbull en Joseph Esherick ontwierpen de eerste gebouwen. Barbara Stauffacher Solomon beschilderde de interieurs met gedurfde supergraphics — een kleurenexplosie in al die terughoudendheid. Het resultaat was werkelijk zonder precedent: een West Coast-vernaculaire modernisme dat landbeheer en ontwerpambitie als één project beschouwde.
