Some candles are worth keeping after the wax is gone. This one earns that before it's even lit — hammered stainless steel vessel, slightly oval, the kind of surface that catches and holds light differently depending on the hour. The candle inside is equally considered: soy wax poured in small batches, scented with essential oils, and free of the synthetic compounds most fragrances quietly carry.

Five scents:

Nohpalli, with notes of agave, chrysanthemum, and patchouli.

Green, which runs cooler — spearmint, eucalyptus, and juniper.

Cala, with hints of clover and lemon peel.

Cypress, with additional notes of bayberry and patchouli.

Satori, with notes of lavender, rosemary, chamomile, and sage.

Twenty-five hours of burn time, and when it's done, the bowl moves to a shelf, a windowsill, a desk — and keeps doing what it does.

Made by Ardent Goods, a woman-owned company in California.

The hammered surface really does catch the candlelight in a way that makes the whole room feel warmer. I've already planned to keep the oval steel votive on my shelf once the wax burns down, it's too nice to toss.

The oval steel vessel casts the prettiest broken light pattern on my wall, even before I light the wick. I've already decided I'm keeping it as a little catch-all dish once the wax burns down.

The hammered steel votive looks handmade and the slightly oval shape throws light in a really pretty uneven way. I've been using it on my desk during evening work sessions and it's become my favorite part of the room. Already planning to keep the vessel for holding my rings once the wax runs out.
