Category: The Desktop

Two pieces that earn their place on a desk — or a kitchen counter, or a windowsill. The cup, wheel-thrown from speckled stoneware and marked with a pressed terracotta disk, holds pens, brushes, or scissors with the quiet authority of something made entirely by hand. The catchall, carved in a faceted form and lined in matte white glaze, is equally suited to paper clips, rings, or the small objects that collect at the edges of a day.

Both pieces come from Lisa Fontaine's garage studio in the Berkeley Hills, where she works in wheel-thrown and hand-built forms shaped by the coastal landscapes of California.

The cup’s weight feels perfect in hand, and the speckled stoneware gives it a handmade look that stands out among my other desk stuff. The terracotta disk adds just enough color without being too loud — exactly what I wanted for holding my daily brush pens.

Emily W. ★★★★★

I’ve been using the cup and its companion piece on my kitchen windowsill — the speckled stoneware looks great against the morning light, and the terracotta disk gives it just enough weight to hold my brush collection steady.

The cup’s terracotta disk detail gives it a nice handmade feel, and the speckled stoneware is weighty without being clunky. I just wish the second piece had a bit more heft to match.
