1965, auf zehn Meilen nebelumtoster Küste Nordkaliforniens, schlossen Architekten einen Pakt mit dem Land. Keine akkuraten Rasenflächen. Keine aufgezwungene Ordnung. Gebäude, die sich in die Landschaft schmiegten, verkleidet mit verwitterndem Holz, dem Wind zugewandt statt ihm trotzend. The Sea Ranch war ein Plädoyer für eine Lebensweise.

Lawrence Halprin plante die Gemeinschaft mit der Überzeugung, dass die Landschaft selbst die Architektur sei. Charles Moore, Donlyn Lyndon, William Turnbull und Joseph Esherick entwarfen die ersten Bauten. Barbara Stauffacher Solomon bemalte die Innenräume mit kräftigen Supergrafiken – ein Farbtupfer inmitten all der Zurückhaltung. Das Ergebnis war etwas wirklich Einzigartiges: ein moderner Stil der Westküste, der Landschaftspflege und gestalterischen Anspruch als ein und dasselbe Projekt betrachtete.

Halprins Skizzen, historische und zeitgenössische Fotografien, Zeichnungen und Essays ordnen The Sea Ranch in die breitere Geschichte der kalifornischen Architektur ein. Die Stimmen der Gestalter selbst ziehen sich durch das gesamte Werk.

Ausgezeichnet mit dem Philip Johnson Exhibition Catalogue Award der Society of Architectural Historians.

I bought this after seeing the Sea Ranch cabins in person, and the book explains why those buildings hunker into the headland instead of fighting the wind. The essays on the no-lawn philosophy are worth it alone, though I wish the plates were bigger.
